Obituary

Asatour K. Arakelov, a resident of Lowell, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Marietta (Avetisian) Arakelova with whom he shared 33 years of marriage until her passing in 1987.

Asatour was born in Baku, USSR, on January 1, 1926 and was a son of the late Khosrov and Tamara (Parsadanov) Arakelova.

His father served proudly during World War 1 in the Russian Army for the Allied Forces. Upon conclusion of the war, Asatour's parents were given an apartment in return for his father's service, and this is where Asatour was born. Asatour attended Armenian School in Baku where he learned to read and write in Armenian and Russian. He was a teenager when World War II began, and he worked in a factory at a shipyard manufacturing weapons. After the war, he became a shoemaker's apprentice and ultimately became a shoe designer. He created the ballet shoes for the dancers at the Baku Opera House. On November 12, 1954, he married Marietta Avetisian Arakelova and together they welcomed three sons. Sadly, his wife passed away on March 2, 1987. In 1989, Asatour and his sons, escaped Baku due to religious persecution and became refugees. He emigrated to the United States in 1992, where he devoted his time to helping his sons with their new life and experiences in their new country. Asatour had many talents, including playing the clarinet. He played over the years at many special occasions such as weddings and parties. He was a skilled chess player all his life, and won a championship award. In his spare time, he enjoyed writing poetry, gardening, playing soccer in his younger years, and reading the great classics. Most of all, he cherished the time he spent with his family.

Asatour leaves his sons; Garen Arakelian and his wife Ellen of Westford, and Aram Arakelian and his wife Marina of Chelmsford, his grandchildren Natalie, Nicole, David, Michael, Alexander, and Marietta Arakelian, his daughter-in-law Arpineh Arakelian of Chelmsford, and many nieces and nephews.

Sadly, he is predeceased by his son Grant Arakelian who passed away in 2017, and his siblings Eisabel, Ofelia, Victoria, and Ermonia Arakelova and Rouben Arakelov.

Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday from 10 - 11 am at Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Church, 180 Old Westford Road, Chelmsford. His Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 o'clock followed by interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.
