Horace 'Gene' Ervin Obituary (1933

GROTON Major Horace Eugene Gene Ervin, (U.S. Army, Retired), 79, a longtime resident of Groton, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Lowell General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Dolores G. (Gerald) Ervin, to whom he was married for 58 years. He was born in Baltimore, MD, on November 30, 1933, and was a son of the late Robert Lee and Anita Marguerite (Frock) Ervin. He received his early education in Baltimore schools and was a graduate of Baltimore City College. He earned his bachelors degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his masters degree in criminal justice from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Gene served a long and distinguished career as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of Major. During which time he earned four bronze stars and four air medals for combat in Vietnam. Prior to his retirement in 1994, he was employed as the Inspector General for Investigations for New England by the US Department of Health and Human Services. Earlier in his career he was a detective in the homicide division of the Baltimore City Police Department. Gene was a Model A car enthusiast, of which he owned three, and an avid civil war buff. He also enjoyed building models of tall ships. He was a member and past president of the Minuteman Model A Ford Club in Sudbury and the Military Officers Association of America. He was also a member of the Federal Criminal Investigators Association. In addition to his wife, Dolores, Gene is survived by his daughter, Kim Ervin Tucker of Islesboro, ME; two nephews, Richard G. Ervin of Kent Island, MD, and Robert B. Ervin of Highland, MD; and a niece, Barbara Lynn Hiden of Fulton, MD. He was also the brother of the late Robert Lee Ervin, Jr. and Harry G. Ervin, both of Maryland, and the brother-in-law of the late Sarah Sally Bissell Ervin. It being his wish, there will be no visitation. A spring burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Genes name to the Alzheimers Association.
