Our Heritage

Established in 1923 by W. Herbert Blake, the original location of Blake Funeral Home was in the Highland section of Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1947, the Funeral Home was purchased by Cortlandt J. Burkinshaw and F. Warren Johnston, both first generation Funeral Directors.

In order to better serve Chelmsford, North Chelmsford and the greater Lowell area, Mr. Burkinshaw and Mr. Johnston opened their second location at 24 Worthen Street in Chelmsford, Massachusetts in 1956. After his untimely passing in 1975 at the age of 59, Mr. Burkinshaw's son, Richard P. Burkinshaw, took over for his father at the funeral home.  In the late 1970's Mr. Johnston retired and sold his remaining shares to Richard.  After devoting 35 years to caring for families, Richard chose to step back and spend most of his days on the golf course in sunny Florida.

Paul A. Hardy, Jr., who joined the staff of Blake Funeral Home in 2004, purchased the business in 2010. Paul is committed to maintaining the Blake Funeral Home reputation for high quality and distinguished service to the community. His commitment, coupled with the growth we have experienced in recent years led Paul to build a new and much larger building to better serve our families and their growing needs while maintaining a warm and comfortable feeling.  In addition to Chelmsford and North Chelmsford, we are proud to serve the many communities of the greater Lowell area, including Westford, Lowell, Dracut, Tyngsboro, Carlisle and Acton as well as southern New Hampshire, including Nashua, NH and Hudson, NH.
